Don’t you just hate it when you put on your new running shoes and with every step you take your toes hit the front causing a very unpleasant feeling? I know this situation all too well. I have long and narrow feet and most running shoes are painful to wear the first few times.

My toes tend to hit the front and the pressure of my toenails being pushed back in my skin is sometimes extremely painful especially when I take my shoes off.

Not only is this shoe very breathable and light, it has a wide toe box space, meaning that your toes will be able to move around and not get squished together. The overall style is rounded instead of pointed, which means more comfort for people with longer toes. Also even though the toe box is wide, the fit itself is narrow.


The upper of the Inov 8 Roadclaw 275 V2 is one of the best I have ever tested out in running shoes. The mesh material has a lot of holes that offer good ventilation and the fabric is overall light. The tongue is padded which aids in the comfort factor.

The back of the heel has extra padding which means that your skin is less likely to get irritated when it comes in contact with the fabric. The logo Is minimalistic which I love. What I don’t love however are the shoelaces that are somewhere in between flat laces and round ones.

The outsole is made from blow rubber that forms a detailed pattern made from squares and triangles as well as EVA foam. This means that these shoes have a good surface grip and provide a non-slip effect on uneasy surfaces. Also, the midsole is only 8mm thick and this means that the weight is distributed pretty evenly between the heel and the toes.

The midsole is made from PowerFlow technology which offers good cushioning on most running surfaces. The PowerFlow is very good at absorbing the shock from impact when your foot touches the ground, as well as returning energy when you lift your foot.

4. New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 V12 – Best Cushioning

These shoes look massive on the rack, but when you try them on you’ll see that they actually look proportionate to your body, at least they did to mine. Not to mention that they are very comfortable.


These shoes have a bootie upper construction that offers extra support. The heel cup is also flared out and protects your ankle. Some people however have an issue with the extra padding on the inner side and point out that it feels uncomfortable and that the heel is slightly loose.

I faced this problem at first, but I fixed it by tying the shoelaces tighter and I felt pretty secure.

The fabric is pretty standard for New Balance it’s breathable and comfortable and the tongue is adjustable.

Outsole and midsole

If you look at the outsole you will find that the toe space is pretty wide, which is something you can’t really tell by looking at the shoes from the top. This is of course good news for people with long toes. However, the blow rubber sole doesn’t have deep patterns which means that the shoes can be slippery on wet surfaces.

The midsole is the key player here. The Fresh Foam technology makes these shoes bouncy and cushy, but don’t let that fool you. You can still stability run in these. I know that they look like they have a cloud for a midsole, but they still offer some firmness. The pattern on the side of the sole is made so that the shoes have that extra cushioning without making the overall sole too squishy and unstable.

When you look at these shoes from the top they look like your standard running shoes, but I put them here for a reason. If you turn them upside down and look at their sole, you’ll see that the sole is actually wide, and that’s why they are comfortable even for people with long toes. I asked other runners and they all agree that these are one of the best running shoes for long toes.


The upper has a sock-like fit and is overall comfortable and lightweight. The emblems on the side are printed instead of stitched on which is a more durable solution. The mesh material is stretchy and hugs the foot but still gives structure.

The toe box offers just enough space for slight toe wiggle action and the heel has extra padding that makes the shoe feel stable. The shoe laces are a bit too bulky for my liking, but you might have different preferences.

The outsole of the Ghost 12 is made of top-quality blow rubber that is very durable and has a pattern designed to give you a good grip. The pattern goes all around the sole and it provides shock absorption as well as good take-off action.

The midsole is made from the signature Ghost DNA Loft and BioMoGo DNA foam that makes the running experience a notch better. I really feel like these shoes make running easier and every time I wear them I feel like I can go one more extra mile than with other shoes. Although I would recommend wearing these shoes when the weather gets a bit chilly since they are a bit thick.

2. ALTRA  Torin 4 Plush – Best for Wide Toes

If you have long toes you probably want to look for running shoes that have a U-front shape rather than a V-front shape. By front shape, I mean the positioning of the toe part of the shoe. The U shape gives your toes more space and saves you from the uncomfortable breaking in a period that can be painful. The ALTRA Torin 4 Plush shoes offer you all of what I just mentioned.


The shoes have a standard mesh knit all around that will keep your feet dry during your run. The opening doesn’t have any extra padding like other running shoes have. Personally, I am not a big fan of no extra padding, since I like the support in my Achilles tendon, but I found that these shoes still give support.

As I mentioned toe box is wide and has a U-shape and it feels extra comfortable, especially for people with longer toes. The tongue is secured by the thin flat laces in multiple places and feels snug.

Even though these shoes are wide in the toe area they still have an overall tight fit to them so they are perfect for people with narrow and long feet.

The FootPod outsole is an upgrade from the brand’s previous models. The pattern of the blown rubber follows the direction of the foot. Despite this, the sole is still flexible and bends just like a sole with horizontal blown rubber patterns.

The midsole has Quantic cushioning that is a bit firmer than what I usually go for but still very comfortable. My favorite part about these shoes is that they have a 0 drop heel to toe, and a 26mm stack height.

Despite what you might think, this doesn’t feel weird at all, the cushioning action makes running in these shoes very comfortable and easy.

1. ASICS Gel-Nimbus 24  – Bes Overall

These are the running shoes people swear by and I had to put them on this list, otherwise, it wouldn’t be complete. Not only are these shoes meant for heel strikers, but they also provide people with long toes the proper amount of space to prevent break-in pain.


The upper of these shoes is pretty standard for running shoes. They have a mesh knit for breathability and have a sock-like feel to them. The design on the side gives the shoes a bit more structure, but nothing too firm.

The heel has extra padding and is slightly elevated. The tongue however tends to slip if it’s not secured tightly with the flat shoe laces. Yes, my favorite kind, flat and thin.

Outsole and midsole

The sole is pretty basic, but the blown pattern rubber pattern is not very deep, so even though it’s durable it might not be slip-prof.

The midsole is made from FlyteFloam Blast+. This means that the midsole has two different densities, firmer in the heel and softer in the midfoot and toes.

Not only does this offer a good push of action, but it also means that the toe area is cushier, that in combination with the generous toe box allows people with long toes extra support and comfort.

The firmer heel also has an added gel padding layer which keeps the heel sturdy while still providing great impact absorption.

The only thing that might throw people off when it comes to these shoes is the 13mmm heel-to-toe drop which can be intense. However, the drop is very steady and the all-around cushioning will make up for the stack height difference.

What to look for in shoes if you have long toes?

If you have longer toes and a narrow foot in general, you will want to look for shoes while paying attention to a few key features.


As I previously mentioned, if you have long toes you want your shoes to have a U-shape instead of a V-shape. The U-shape will give your toes plenty of space to move around and you won’t feel like you’re being squished.

Look for shoes that are labeled as wide-toe or foot-shaped, that’s how you know that they have generous toe space. Or, you can always just turn the shoe around and see does the sole look like the shoes have the desired toe space. And of course, try them on and see how they fit.


A lot of shoe brands offer shoes that have a narrow, wide, and extra-wide options. If you have longer toes and a narrow foot it goes without saying that you should go for the narrow model. Also, you might want to go a size up just in case your toes feel a bit squished together.

Break in

You want to go for shoes that have little to no break-in time. This means that the shoes should fit properly from day one without you having to wear them around your house in order to break them in. Go for shoes that are less stiff and have a more flexible upper.
