Let’s talk drinky dranks. After all, a) It is St. Patrick’s Day, and b) it felt like spring this weekend (although it is far cooler today- blarg). Specifically, let’s talk Margaritas a) because they are green as a base (see a above) and b) because I love them. Seriously. I love margaritas. But I am very particular about my margs. After all, I love and actually know tequila and also I don’t like a lot of extra sugar and simple syrup in my drinks. Typically, as I’ve talked about before, I like my tequila pretty well and straight. And if mezcal is on the menu, HELL YES. Give me tequila/mezcal + soda/water + lime and that is all I need. But I am not a big regular drinker, and I need to keep a tap on my sugar intake (hello, with all the ice cream and such).

And Limeades? Heck yes. Cherry limeades from Sonic were my poison of choice as a kid! So my mission today? Create a marg/limeade recipe that is low in sugar but ready for spring. And to forget about the green part for the finished product. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

SO MUCH LOVE

Slim Lizzy’s Cocktails

I heard about Slim Lizzy’s through my partnership with Windy City Bloggers, and I got in touch with them because I like fun drinking coming up with fun flavor combinations and playing with mixology. Moreover, because I am a light drinker and health conscious, I love these types of alternative drinks that aren’t laden with sugar. And I dig margaritas and cosmopolitans, but I hardly ever have a reason to make and enjoy one for myself!

Slim Lizzy’s Cocktails are gluten-free, malt-free, non-carbonated personal cocktails that come in 4 packs of 8 oz cans (each 80 calories and 3g of sugar) or 750 ml bottles. Or, if you are REALLY feeling ready to party, go for the party keg! Which is kind of an awesome idea, if you think about it… They are available locally and nationally–check the site and it will tell you where to find them!

But I digress. I got the chance to try both the margarita and the cosmopolitan, and I am a big, big fan! I drank mine in a classy fashion–out of the can–first, and then over ice in a real glass. Serving it a bit extra cold is, in my opinion, the way to go–it brings out the zip in the citrus, and in fact, I preferred my margarita with a little extra lime juice. I liked the fact that they weren’t carbonated and were also gluten and malt free–the lack of these three elements mean that I didn’t that oh-so-sexy belch effect that we all know results from beer or one to many ___ and sodas. The 8 oz size was great–easy to hold, the right amount for you to mix with other fun things or pour over ice. Or do both!

I gave you all a teaser on IG, but for National Margarita Day–Well, let’s be honest, I was planning on having one anyway, as a) I wanted one and b) sweet potato nachos were happening. Thus, margs were on 😀 –but just a plain margarita? I SAY NAY.

Suzlyfe’s Hibiscus Margarita or Limeade aka Out-of-Hibernation

So I Suz-ified that ish. Margs #likeaSuz. I used to work at a very upscale Mexican restaurant here in Chicago that specialized in tequila and craft margaritas. So I decided to see if I could recreate a version of one of the margaritas that I loved there that featured an uncommon ingredient: Hibiscus!

hibiscus

one of my absolute favorite flowers

Hibiscus is actually beneficial for you (so drink a helluva lot of these drinks JUST KIDDING DON”T DO THAT). Like many other floral sources, it is thought to be helpful in digestion issues and even for your skin. This article goes into some depth about the various benefits of hibiscus, but as always, I say do what works for you, and consult a doctor before pursuing herbal remedies to make sure that there is not interaction with your medications/conditions!

This skinny hibiscus margarita recipe uses the delicious Slim Lizzy’s Margarita as a base and then adds floral hibiscus, tart blood orange, and the light zing of ginger and lime to bring you out of hibernation!  A great option for people who like margarita-esque beverages but don’t want to do tequila. As sad as that might be. But if you like tequila, add a little to it ;0 I give you the Suzlyfe’s Hibernation Margarita with Slim Lizzy’s! And make sure that you are responsible–don’t drink and drive, and watch your consumption!
