My Nonchalant Birthday Weekend

And welcome back to another week of weather craziness! My birthday was this past weekend, and I’m sure you all are expecting BIG THINGS! Well, they happened, but nonchalantly.

This week was (as I just said), my birthday, but with Alex on air call throughout the weekend (he was at home, but with the possibility of having to go in) and after the happy hour margarita extravaganza last weekend, we decided to keep it low key, which was fine by me! I used to love the whole birthday week celebration, but now that I get such random chances to be with Alex and I’m not looking for any major gifts, I’m kind of meh on the going crazy.

I didn’t say I was meh on being crazy, though.

That doesn’t mean that I didn’t spend the day doing as I pleased, however 😀

It was totally fabulous to have all the love sent my way throughout the course of the week and weekend, though, don’t get it twisted! It is lovely to know that people care enough to go out of their way to say hello and happy birthday, and awesome to hear from people who I’ve not spoken to for ages, but who still feel a connection and want to reach out. 

How I Spent My 28th Birthday Weekend

Friday, I had work, and the weather was crap (surprise, surprise) but I got a run (still doing my intervals) and worked on some projects for work as well as trained some clients. My bosses were so sweet and got me a hilarious card and spa gift certificate! How awesome is that! That evening, after driving through snow/rain/sun/snow (no, I am not kidding) home, Alex and I went to another of our favorite places, Doc B’s as part of our Neighborhood Farewell Tour. We got our favorites: the Internal Affair (basically, a spicy margarita)

Then we came home and watched The Emperor’s New Groove (neither of us had seen it, and we are on our Disney kick) and then I NO LIE fell asleep on the couch at 8. I could stop it. I was just exhausted! I think it is going back to running and the let down of the weekend. I’m not tired during the day, I’m just crashing at night!

I slept like a champ that night and woke up to FREAKING SNOW Saturday (my birthday) morning. WHAT THE FLAMING HELL CHICAGO. Last year, I spent my birthday dealing with delayed flights due to rain but then a beautiful weekend in Atlanta; this year I was here, and we get a snow storm. THIS IS APRIL. GET IT TOGETHER.

And it was freezing. But the good news? Oatmeal and coffee and then running with my Team Challenge Co-coach Bill and trainee Sarah (the only one brave enough to show up, lol). The paths were icy AF, so we had to be careful, but it was my first real continuous run since October, so I will take it! 2 continuous miles 😀

I came home to find that the kitchen fuse for our apartment had blown, so we had no appliances in the kitchen. Good work, apartment. So glad to be rid of you soon! Luckily, it got fixed before I left for Sweatworking at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel! 

Jeana always does a great job with the Sweatworking events–if you live in Chicago, I highly recommend them! Emily Hutchins (who I have taken several classes with through Nike) kicked our butts, and I did my first HIIT/Bootcamp style workout since my injury. I’m not gong to lie, I was a bit nervous, and it was pretty obvious that I have a lot more work to do to get back to my previous state, but I can still hold an air squat for 3+ minutes at the end of a workout! 

I was careful, and by the end I only had a little achiness in my SI Joint/sacrum area. And it felt fine the next day (though my bum muscles were a bit sore and tired!).

It was also great to see Jackie, one of my trainees from last summer, and to catch up with her. I follow her on IG and we are friends on FB, so I know that she has been KILLING it with her speed workouts, and I loved seeing how excited she was about her progress!

When I got home, it was time to get to work. No, not on the blog, or developing workouts, or anything of the sort, but rather on going through our stuff. I put lots of stuff on eBay, we filled multiple bags with trash, recycling, and clothes for donation, and we still have so much more to do! But I had a lovely chat with my brother (I talked to my parents earlier in the day) while doing it, and we kept the Masters on in the background.

I totally associate the Masters with my birthday. I can’t tell you how many years we have gone to my birthday dinner late, or watched TV during, because of the tournament! And no, I’ve never gone. I may be from Atlanta, have a golfing father, and have a lake house halfway between Augusta and Atlanta, but those tickets are pricey, and you practically have to be grandfathered in!

That night, I cooked (yes, I cooked!) zoodles with chicken, veggies, and a fig balsamic mustard sauce (sounds fancy, was the easiest thing ever) for dinner with a glass of merlot and sweet potato chips and hummus. Weird, low key, quick and easy, and above all, healthy and delicious. I didn’t take a picture of the final product because it didn’t look pretty, but it was amazing, so I see it happening again!

We finished out the night with multiple servings of dark chocolate cheerios, Greek Yogurt, and An Idiot Abroad (I’ve seen it, but Alex hasn’t).

Nonchalant, but filled with amazing, just like last weekend: running, friends, food (and yep, my 5 essential foods!).

Sunday was back to the grind a bit: random things had to get done, we went to D4 for brunch as part of the Farewell Tour, then groceries, lounging and the gym. I made sweet potato quesadillas for dinner, another recipe that I need to add to the “needs to be photographed list.” 

You don’t have to go overboard to celebrate when you celebrate the little things, right? But, like I said, I so appreciate the love sent my way this weekend. I certainly felt it, and I hope I can return it to you on your special day!
