Well, today is the month anniversary of the Chicago Marathon. I had originally thought that I might discuss how I am getting back into training after a month of recovery and light running, but well, you know what it going on with that. EVEN SO, we are going to talk about getting the most out of your workout. Healthy Skoop Protein Powder and New Ignite Endurance Beet Blend

I was first introduced to Healthy Skoop last year when I reviewed their Skoop B-Strong protein powder (another fantastic superfood-laden, gluten free, vegan protein powder!) and created some seriously delicious Butterscotch Chip Banana Pumpkin Protein Muffins. In fact, Skoop is one of my favorite baking protein powders!

Skoop reached out to me a few weeks ago to see if I might be interested in trying out their new Ignite Endurance Beet Blend, and, knowing how much I love their other products as well as how much I love me some beets, I said heck yes! Regardless of whether or not I am hurt and can’t run, I can still workout, and now, more so than ever, I need anti-inflammatory nutrients to help my system recover and work its best.

I am not typically one for preworkout supplements such as BCAA’s or otherwise, but Ignite is different: it contains 5 ingredients (Beets and Pomegranates, D-Ribose, Agave, Stevia, all organic) and no BS. That means NO caffeine, stimulants, or electrolytes. Furthermore, Ignite is free of soy, dairy, and gluten, as well as being vegan and non-GMO.

And even cooler? The beets are dried in such a way that none of the nutritional value is lost.

Unlike the smoothie that I made with it, which I upended all over the floor. Half on my photo posterboard and half on the carpet. Again, beet. Think about what beets do to your fingers when you touch them. Yeah. I think CSI is going to be on its way.

But they would probably get better pictures. I have no photo background, so we are going to have to make due with this one 😀

I was open to trying out this preworkout blend for a few reasons: 

  1. I trust the ingredient list
  2. I trust the company
  3. I love beets
  4. I want to help my body heal but I want to keep on doing my workouts
  5. I tend to reach for a piece of candy or something sweet before I head out the door–why not make this “reach for something sweet” actually work FOR me? 

I love beets and apples together, but what really sealed the deal for me was the fact that I still had some leftover applesauce and Lindsay reminded us all last week that beets and apples are not just tasty but a nutrient powerhouse together!  And BAM the Ignite Apple Beet Preworkout Smoothie (gluten free and vegan!) was born. I decided to add in a little nut butter to give it a bit more satisfying staying power, and feel free to add greens to it as well!

Ingredients
  1. 1 Scoop Skoop Sweet Beet Ignite Endurance Blend (or Berry Beet Blend)
  2. 1/2 medium apple
  3. 2 TBSP Unsweetened natural applesauce (See Suzlyfe Recipe)
  4. 1 cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (Or other Vegan Milk of choice)
  5. 1 cup ice (as needed)
  6. Optional: 1 TBSP Nut Butter
  7. Optional: Spinach or other power green!
  8. Pinch Salt
Instructions
  1. Combine ingredients in blender and blend until smooth!

It was truly delicious before I lost it all. And who doesn’t love a smoothie in a wine glass 😀 The flavor is clean with just the right amount of sweet (the Berry Beet flavor has berries and cucumber as well, and is just as fantastic and even more refreshing!) while remaining balanced.

Since I upended my drink, I have tried the Ignite again. Alex is currently doing a week of nights, so (much to Zoe’s chagrin), I’ve been buzzing up some Ignite before going to use the spin bike (my only non-pain-inducing movement). It feels great to get in that extra hydration, and I’ve got something that is satisfying my already active sweet tooth! I’m really enjoying the change in routine. Note that I’m not replacing my breakfast with this, just adding it on 😀
