Though we were provided with certain foods by conference sponsored, it was absolutely our choice to eat those foods, and we were under no obligation to discuss them unless we so desired. I am mentioning my favorites so that you can have some idea as to what was made available! Opinions are absolutely my own.
Um, can I just really quick say a HUGE AND HEARTY hello to all my new readers?? I feel like the blog has grown a ton in the past few days (no doubt thanks to Blogfest, but I hope that many of you will stick around!).Thank you all for all the Facebook/Instagram/Twitter love (and don’t forget I’m on Pinterest as well!) as well! I love connecting with you all in the ways that you like to interact the most–some people like to comment on the blog but stay off social media, some people I connect with almost exclusively on IG or otherwise, and I think that is great–I love the variety and the opportunity and the complexity of the interactions that each medium engenders.
NOW DON’T LEAVE ME!!
How do you maintain your healthy eating when at all-day conferences? Well, first off, you surround yourself with people who make there living eating healthfully, secondly, you bring snacks, and third, you involve companies that make it their mission to make healthy food accessible. If only we had been given DeskCycles to combat being sedentary! Oh wait, we did workout a few times lol.
What I Ate Wednesday: Healthy Conference Foods at Blogfest
Today, I am going to try to squish three days of eats into one post, so bear with me. Normally, I go into quite a bit of detail about each offering, but this time, I am going to attempt to keep myself to just a blurb about my eats. If there is something that grabs your interest, let me know in the comments, and I will be happy to elaborate!
I do have one comment about the food that we ate while at Blogfest. On the whole, I was quite happy with the provided eats–I thought that they were rather healthy options. That said, I would have loved to have seen WAY more fresh options like fruits and vegetables offered throughout the day. I understand that we were (of course) being sponsored by certain companies, but this girl needs a salad! That said, when vegetables were provided, they were GREATLY appreciated, such as at the Nestle lunch, with the Truitt hummus, and at the breakfast cereal bar. That said, I do realize the struggle of offering foods that will not go bad throughout the day, but if they were able to offer us yogurt, I feel like they could have put out a few veggie trays!
My other comment with regards to the foods made available would be that they were not all that vegan/lactose intolerant friendly. Again, Truitt was great in offering some of these options, but considering you are in a room of bloggers that lead organic, vegan, gluten free, etc lifestyles, I would have liked to have seen a bit more made available for them.
Please note that this is not all that I ate during these days. I am focusing on the most interesting eats. You all know that I’m a snacker!!
Wednesday Eats (Traveling and Pre Blogfest)
Travel Eats: Intelligentsia Half Caff Coffee and Yummy Health Bar (one of my last sadface)
Coffee is always necessary. It was an ass-crack of dawn flight, so I knew that I needed to spread things out a little bit. Thankfully, not only was my coconut Yummy Health bar the perfect amount of sweet without being overpowering, it tasted like Mounds/Almond Joy/Macaroon and filled me up with protein and fiber! I had another few snacks throughout the morning, but without this, I think I would have been lost.
Lunch: The Filling Station at the JW Marriott (with Heather and Beth)
I was really pumped about this Chicken Chopped Salad a) because I was starving b) because of the company that I was in and c) because of the ingredients listed: pumpkin seeds, jicama, corn, tomatoes, green papaya, chicken, and lettuces. And then I got it and not only did it have the cheese on it that I asked be removed, it didn’t have pumpkin seeds or corn on it and very little of everything else!! Not so happy, and too expensive. After we went to the expo, I got a Blackberry Hibiscus Refresher and popcorn at Starbucks.
Dinner: Brick Betty (Come back Friday!!!) Dinner at Live Basil
SO excited to tell you about Brick Betty (on Friday!!), but for now, I’ll tell you about Live Basil, which was a Blaze-esque build your pizza and salad place with other nibbles in the midst of LA Live (where the LA Convention Center, Staples Center, and the JW Marriott, where we were staying, was). We got various pizzas and salads, and I went to TOWN. Seriously. I was so full at the end!
Healthy Conference Foods Thursday (BlogFest)
Post Run Snack: Truitt Family Farms
Thank you to Truitt Family Foods for sponsoring our fun run #BeTruBlogfest as well as making the snacks available in the conference room along with chips and baby carrots (I took SO MANY). The hummus is shelf stable and delicious (great texture) and I also loved the bean puree dips. I think they are mostly in CA, but I brought some home to Alex!
Snack: Yoplait Plenti Blended Greek Yogurt (Blueberry)
This stuff is pretty cool–nonfat blended Greek yogurt with pumpkin seeds, oats, and fruit incorporated! Nice and chewy, and loved that there was texture.
Lunch: Nestle Lean Cuisine Lunch
I am going to concentrate on what was great about this lunch, which was the sides. Heirloom salad with cotija cheese and cilantro; tricolor cauliflower rice, quinoa, and chickpea “pizza-nella” (rather than panzanella) salad; cooked broccoli rabe with mangos, peppers, and avocado lime cilantro sauce. Not pictured but also really yummy: chocolate chip quinoa cookies and stone fruits with passion fruit glaze (didn’t need the glaze, but whatever).
With regards to the focus of the meal, the frozen dinners, I was less than impressed, to be honest. But the sides were fantastic.
Snack: Nutrition Expo
I hosed #allthesamples samples, but I really loved the new Kashi Sprouted Grains and Sweet Potato Sunshine cereals. I went back a few times, I’m ok with it.
Dinner: Rosa Mexicano at LA Live
Table-side guacamole, a shizzzz ton of chips, jicama, ceviche de camarones (shrimp ceviche), and El Jimador Blanco + club soda. And I got the waiter to be totally scared of me. Worth it because I got what I wanted 😀
Dessert: Sweat Pink/Fit Approach Party at IDEA World Urban Party
Chocolate chip cookie and sugar cookie as well as fruit and chocolate shavings. The Sweat Pink Ladies had a pre-party area with food and stuff (we were too hungry to wait, thus Rosa Mexicano!), but we helped ourselves to desserts!
Healthy Conference Foods Friday (BlogFest)
Breakfast #1: Starbucks and Oats (with a side of blogging and blends)
I’m now addicted to the Sbux Clover machine. You can make a grande decaf coffee with 1/5 caff coffee, and it a thing of beauty, glory, and no bitterness, and was $3. SOLD. Brought the oats with me, and I needed something easy before a workout (with Kaia Fit). Extra flavor? Sitting next to friends from all over the country while blogging.
Breakfast #2: General Mills Breakfast Bar
Post Kaia workout, I went to town on some General Mill cereals (all sorts, including honey nut cheerios and cinnamon toast crunch), Yoplait Greek 100, and fruit. Wish they had made this available throughout the day!
Lunch: Morningstar Farms Lunch
Something that struck me was a total lack of veggies at this lunch! But the prepared foods were tasty–I especially liked the buffalo chick’n pizza and the Indian spiced burger stuffed pita. But considering how focused they are on plant based lifestyles…. where were the plants??
If you don’t love Siggi’s yogurt, we can’t be friends (if you are lactose intolerant or vegan, I understand, but I still don’t trust you). Plus, Siggi HIMSELF was there, and he is adorable! And so freaking tall and Scandinavian (reminds me of some of my best friends).
Dinner: (From Saturday, as it was a bit more exciting)
YAY I got to try In-N-Out, and I LOVED it. I liked that the burgers were larger than Shake Shack, and there was no butter involved. This was what I think of when I think of a diner burger, and it was fantastic. And I helped Ange with her fries and then followed it up with a sample bag of new Salted Caramel Apple Bear Naked Granola, which was great–not too sweet or salty!
That’s a lot of food, and I still could go on! But I want to say thank you again to the Fit Approach/Sweat Pink team for organizing the incredible sponsors, and to Tiffany for bringing in Truitt foods. What would we have done without you all?
