YummyHealth YummySnacks Review and Giveaway

After trying the product after the Phoenix Marathon (where I received samples from a grocery store), I reached out to YummyHealth and asked them about doing a review and giveaway of their product. This is completely my own doing, and all opinions are my own!

I am about to change your candy-loving life, so if you have a sweet tooth, you better turn everything off and give me your full attention. I mentioned these bars in my 5 favorite healthy food companies new and old post, and I gave some away in my Healthy Snacks on the Go giveaway earlier this month, but now I have a full review and a chance for EVERYONE IN NORTH AMERICA (yup, that means YOU Canada!!!!) to win some!

You know I love a good product with a great story. Well, here is the story behind YummyHealth

Fed up with watching her kids become chubby junk food addicts, YummyHealthยฎ founder – journalist and mom Lisa Goldbaum โ€“ searched for healthier options, only to find that most so-called โ€œhealthyโ€ snacks contained as much sugar and processed starch as the regular commercial varieties. Lisa created YummySnacks that are delicious but low in the sugars and starches that wreak havoc on kidsโ€™ energy levels, moods and food cravings. 

So how do YummySnacks help you “eat right without a fight?”

By being lower in sugar and processed starches and filled natural and REAL ingredients like cocoa, coconut, almond butter, and flax seed, and real cheddar from Wisconsin in the crisps. There are obviously no preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, or high-fructose corn syrup, and NO GLUTEN.

And, as I will tell you in a minute, for a far lower number of calories coming from far better ingredients with far better macros than your child’s (or your own) typical afternoon snack, YummySnacks will make you forget those other bars…. what are they called again? 

So that’s all fine and good, but what about the taste, texture, and satisfaction factors?

YummyHealth YummySnacks “Candy” Bars

There delicious morsels of “decadence” are anything but bad for you. Each bar, regardless of flavor, is Gluten Free, Low sugar (5-8 g, compared to the 20+ g of regular candy bars!), High fiber (try up to 10 grams!), a decent amount of protein (from 3-10 g), and 100% of your Omega-3s for the day. Forget about fish burps, I would rather burp chocolate, lol.

These are certainly a “don’t miss anything” substitute for candy bars. Texturally, some are a bit almond joy or peppermint patty like, while the others are what you would expect of a cookie snack bar (similar to a Balance bar, maybe?). There is a little bit of texture in there from the coconut, but the right amount of chew, a deep, intense chocolate flavor in each bite. Let’s talk about flavors!

  • Brownie Bar

I almost wish that this was an actual brownie, so that I could get the recipe and make and bake it halfway. INDULGENT–a real deep and cocoa like flavor, truly like a brownie! My first thought was fudge brownie ice cream using this instead needs to happen! 130 calories, 8 g fiber, 7 g sugar, 7 g protein. TRY to beat that.

  • Chocolate

Godiva chocolate truffles have met their match. Seriously. 

  • Coconut

Like I said in my previous review, think of an Almond Joy or Mounds bar, minus the almond. HOLY CRAP these are amazing. If you like coconut and chocolate (basically, if you like life), you will want to die in one of these.

  • Cookie Dough

Do I even have to tell you that it is delicious? Good. Because if you’ll excuse me, my mouth is currently quite full. Think of a slightly less sugary Chips Ahoy cookie (but not crunchy) with a bit of chocolate over top. YUM. 10 g of protein here, too!

  • Peanut Butter

If you are a Reese’s addict but want to get some better served calories and fiber in, you will be so happy with these. Actually, I like them even more! 7 g each of protein, fiber, and sugar, for 150 calories? HELL YEAH

  • Peppermint

This took me right back to a York Peppermint Patty. I even chilled mine like I used to with the Yorks! I was initially a bit worried about these (before I knew that they would be enrobed in chocolate as well :D) but that discovery made my day!

I love the fact that these are all such throwback, nostalgic, and fun flavors! All are made withh Wisconsin cheese and natural spices, baked, and are Gluten Free, Grain Free, have 5 g of protein and 1 g carb per serving. If you are a cheese person (or even if you aren’t, like myself) you will LOVE these. They were like eating those devilish cheese straws that we all love but that have no nutritional value. I crumbled them into sandwiches, on spaghetti squash (in lieu of seasoning), and salads!

  • Cheddar

Ever had a cheddar frico? Or, here you go, ever melted cheddar on a flat top or saute pan and let it harden? THAT IS WHAT THIS TASTES LIKE. HOW IS THIS GOOD FOR YOU??? Essentially, cheese twists or straws. But not greasy, or crumbly.

  • Nacho

While I didn’t get a lot of “nacho” flavor, I did get a hint of heat. i would say that this tastes like baked Cheddar Jack cheese. My first experimentation with these was on spaghetti squash (like I mentioned above) with chicken, some veggies, and a touch of NC vinegar based BBQ sauce. No seasoning needed to top it off, I just used the chips!

  • Pizza

Not as spicy as the nacho flavor, and more reminiscent of a mozzerella. Like little bagel bites! Cheesey, salty, YUM. Remember my Wasabi Potato Chip crusted Salmon recipe? I think that these need to become a crust for my Gluten Free Chicken Parm recipe for cheese-chip crusted chicken. Delicious!

As you can tell, I am seriously impressed by these bars, and the company. I would say that my only qualm would be that they are very intense–you know that I like to take smaller bites of bit impact foods. But I got around that very easily by chopping them up over my ice cream and yogurt. It was PERFECT for my nightly ice cream because I was getting a very balanced set of macros, which, as you know, is very important to me for my marathon training nutrition.

These healthy candy bars and cheese chips will take you right back to your childhood without taking you back to your childhood eating habits. Because I know I ate my fair share of snack bars. Now? I can do the same thing without thinking twice about it.

    I loved Milky Ways too…and I actually ate a lot of twizzers growing up. My parents used to have a big container of them in our pantry so it was really easy to grab them throughout the day. I also loved chocolate chip cookies (and still do!)

    I lived for Twix. So delicious. That and Butterfingers. I think I could still eat my body weight in candy if I could : ) My weakness is chips… I love the salt. And it’s a great way to eat guac, which is one of my fave things in the world. I really hope I win this haha… I am obsessed with your review… but I could use some white chocolate in my life : )

    Oh man, I LOVE junk food. Currently, Sour Patch kids are my jam for sweets, and Cheez Doodles are like crack to me. I could seriously sit down and eat an entire bag no problem. Did I miss in your post where I can find/buy YummySnacks products? I’d love to try some.

    Have a good trip and a fun and safe race! I’ll be thinking of you. I don’t think we have Milky Ways in Canada? Oh maybe. I know we don’t have a lot of what you guys have. I love any chocolate made by Cadbury. There’s just something sweeter and creamier about Cadbury than Hershey or Nestle.

    Have a blast at Ragnar (but I already know you will!) I am not a huge candy bar person, but if I HAD to pick something it would be a frozen snickers (yes, I like the hard crunch when they are frozen!) My junk food weekness is Robyn’s chocolate chip cookies, I literally can make myself sick eating them–SO SO GOOD!

    Peanut butter M&Ms are my true candy weakness. I only let them near me if it’s my birthday or after a race. These look so good and I love how there’s no artificial stuff or HFCS!

    I’m guessing these have dairy but they do look good! My fave candy bar as a kid was hands down SNICKERS! I would do anything to taste one of those babies again. Oh man do I missss them! I hope in my next life I can eat dairy again! Hahaha Have a great time Susie ๐Ÿ™‚

    Being Type 1 Diabetic, I definitely craved sweets as a child…I once dreamed that my kitchen was made of Oreo cookies and I ate the *whole thing*! As an adult, I found that I crave saltier things…particularly Parmesan Goldfish and Munchos potato crisps. These seem like a safe, low-carb way for me to indulge…I hope I win!
