This is going to be a relatively short post, as I know that the vast majority of you all will be enjoying the long weekend. And if you are not, I hope that you are enjoying your Monday nonetheless!
So rarely do we take the time to think about what Memorial Day, but I just want to say that I am so thankful for the toil and sacrifice of so many for the betterment of our nation and the world and in defense of personal liberty. I will be proud to wear my Marine Corps Marathon paraphernalia today, take the moment today to reflect on what it means to give your life in the service of a greater cause, and I hope that we all make the effort to thank a service person!
Being saluted by Marines as they handed me my medal at the end of the Marine Corps Marathon (my first, read my review and recap here, and here) was a profound moment for me. I am someone who often lives in blissful ignorance of, or perhaps blissful distraction away from, certain realities of the world as well as the necessity of war and power in the pursuit of peace. But I have to say, running that marathon really helped me gain a new perspective on that aspect of the world–Marines cheering us on as we ran, handing us our aid, shaking out hands and thanking us at the end of the race, and then giving us our medals and saluting… I felt unworthy. It was truly humbling.
So thank you all for your service. I wish you health and success in your campaigns.
Next up, I wanted to just briefly discuss the book that utterly captivated me during the first few days of the trip: Lauren Hildebrand’s Unbroken.
I could not put that book down. Louie Zamberini, the protagonist, not only has what has to be one of the most remarkable stories that I have ever heard–essentially, he is like a real life Forrest Gump, being part of some of the most landmark moments in the Pacific Theater in World War II, he was an Olympian, poised to break the 4 minute mile before anyone else (in history as well as in age), and then he (and others) survives 46 days stranded on the ocea (wasting away to half of his body weight) and then multiple years in Japanese war prisons. And it doesn’t end there.
It is, at times, a difficult book to read, simply because of the subject matter, but Hildebrand writes in such a well balanced and accessible but highly learned (I ADORE her vocabulary!) prose that you find yourself being able to “take it.” And the story itself leaves you on the edge of your seat. Now I MUST see the movie, but I urge you all to read the book–it is mesmerizing, spellbinding, and makes you believe in the human spirit. Highly, highly recommend.
Lastly, I wanted to round up some of my favorite summer grilling/potluck recipes as well as direct you to a post that I wrote last year for my work blog that has some fantastic recipes as well! I would say that Alex and I are going to take advantage of the day to grill out, but we’ve been doing a lot of that (oh, and all the seafood, lol) the past week to let some others have a chance!
