Hey, everyone! Checking in from Michigan, currently standing in Founder’s Brewpub and Taphouse, where Alex and I have been happily ensconced for a while. I was going to try to continue posting on my usual schedule, but I’m giving a warning that that may or may not happen….
A few updates since yesterday!
Grand Rapids Vacation Day 1
We decided to leave for vacay a little early and get lunch on the road. The day was perfect for driving, the fall colors were out, so we got Tally (my car) out and vroom zoomed our way to Michigan! We stopped at this fantastic restaurant and bar in New Buffalo, MI, called The Stray Dog. HIGHLY recommend if you are in the area.
Hilarious side story—Alex asked if they had any Bailey’s at the bar. Our waitress thought he said “bay leaves,” and the dear went and got us some! Omg it was priceless. We ultimately get Alex some Bailey’s, though. And I also must say that the season draft they had, called Pumpkin Smash was just that—smashing. Heavy, but amazing. I had ahi tuna, Alex got the beer battered cod sandwich, and we shared the hummus starter. Loved our lunch there!
We continued north to Grand Rapids, where we are now staying at a great bed and breakfast in this amazing historic Victorian house. I’ll tell you about it later. But they have the original DONKEY KONG ARCADE. And a classic 1950s jukebox. I have to tell y’all about it.
Yesterday afternoon, we had some time and the day was gorgeous, so we (upon the suggestion of the b&b owner) visited the Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.
If you are in Grand Rapids, DO THIS. It will blow you away. Incredible presentation, sculptures, and landscaping.
So glad that I brought my big camera! But you might not get to see those pics because right now I’m on my phone!
We finished the evening/night at Founder’s Brewing, another must do on the Grand Rapids list. Fun atmosphere, huge beer selection, tons of great food, fun staff. And a chili that I am going to reproduce at home!
Plus , they had The Princess Bride AND football on, lol, so I was happy!
Today (Tuesday) we are going to see how the weather turns out—you all know I want to go apple picking, but Alex had such a great time at Meijer Gardens that he wants to go back! There is so much that we didn’t get to see, even—we got there with 45 minutes to explore, and no idea how big the place was.
My first impressions of Grand Rapids as a whole is that it is a fun, laid back, town with a great mixture of new and old architecture. We both were saying that if it wasn’t likely to be FREEZING during the winter we would consider it. But I’d be cold, and it would be even harder for our parents to see us. But I’d love to find a southeastern option like it.
I’m excited to explore more! But I will be pacing myself, by the end of yesterday, Alex and I had tried 10 different beers… Don’t worry, we were careful with our driving.Great food, great beer, great adventures, @Suzlyfe is loving Grand Rapids! #puremichigan #travel Click To Tweet
Have you ever been to Grand Rapids? Any suggestions?
Do you ever take midweek vacations? It’s pretty awesome having the run of the place!
