Favorite Textured Vegetable Protein Recipes (Vegan, Gluten Free)


I’ve mentioned TVP, or textured vegetable protein, time and again over the years of this blog, and I thought it high time that I bring together some of my favorite textured vegetable protein recipes (that also happen to be vegan and gluten free!). Perfect for lunch, dinner, and even breakfast!

What is Textured Vegetable Protein?

Textured Vegetable Protein, or TVP is defatted soy protein that is cooked under pressure and then dried. TVP is naturally gluten free, vegan, and has very little flavor of its own, making it perfect for those who are looking for a plant based protein and can handle soy. The dehydrated nature of TVP means that you can rehydrate it with just about any liquid to infuse it with flavor.

Per 1/4 cup dry serving, TVP is high in protein (12g protein), high fiber (4g fiber), nearly sodium free (2 mg), with 18% of your RDA magnesium and only 3g of sugar. This is a blank protein slate!

I discovered TVP back when I first started reading blogs during grad school, and it has been one of my favorite quick, easy, vegan/vegetarian/plant based meat sources since. I ran out right before we moved, and it wasn’t until this past month that I finally replenished my stock. Bring on the vegan beef tacos! Bring on the vegan chorizo! BRING ON THE VEGAN CHORIZO PUMPKIN QUESADILLAS!!!

And now? Recipe Time. My favorite textured vegetable protein recipes. Bonus points because they are also Vegan and Gluten Free, and thus I can share them with just about anyone!


Vegan Ground Beef (GF)

My Savory gluten free vegan ground beef is a favorite textured vegetable protein recipe. TVP is a fantastic meatless Monday option for a quick and tasty lunch! @suzlyfe

My vegan ground beef is probably my most frequently used textured vegetable protein recipe. I have it weekly when I have TVP in my cupboards, and it is the most versatile of all of my recipes. Seriously, it is fantastic and a total favorite!

(This is also a super old recipe, before I really did “recipes” so it is kind of hidden in that post, and I will likely update it soon. I apologize!)

Vegan Chorizo (GF)

Love chorizo but either can't handle the real thing or can't have it because it isn't gluten free or vegan? Try this copycat version of Trader Joe's Soy Chorizo and enjoy! Recipe at

Good gravy, I love my vegan chorizo. I started making it on my own, then tried Trader Joe’s vegan soyrizo and refined my recipe. Vegan chorizo is perfection in tacos and quesadillas (as you are about to see), but it is also amazing on its own like above with winter squash (love me some delicata) and a drizzle of honey mustard.

Vegan Chorizo Pumpkin Quesadilla (GF)

Spicy, savory, slightly sweet, and all around delicious, these healthy, vegan, gluten free pumpkin chorizo quesadillas will transform your favorite quick dinner into a gourmet meal!

Another recipe that I absolutely adore is my vegan chorizo pumpkin quesadillas. Well, technically they are quesadillas if you make them without cheese, but that is neither here nor there 😀 All I know is that they are delicious, and now I now I know what I am having for dinner tonight.

Vegan Ground Beef for Vegan Bolognese (GF)

You must try this Gluten Free Vegan Bolognese Recipe! One of my favorite TVP recipes, it is the perfect quick Meatless Monday Recipe!

My vegan bolognese is such an old recipe, and I need to reshoot it, but it is definitely a go-to for me. I love the balsamic in there, and it is another that can be cooked up in barely any time at all. The convenience and quick-production makes it perfect for making into gluten free vegan bolognese ravioli. Or just incorporating into a tomato sauce and putting over spaghetti squash!

Savory Oatmeal Patties aka Vegan Oat Burgers (GF)

These vegan burgers utilize the chewier texture of oats with the protein punch of TVP to give you an awesome alternative to veggie burgers and meat burgers (perfect for football season!). They hold up really well in buns, they freeze well (you know I love to freeze things), and they are another perfectly crumbly option for zoodles and gluten free pasta. OR (omg genius idea) you can use them on my sweet potato nachos!

Dammit, now I have a tough dinner decision to make. Luckily, I have options and TVP is so easy to prepare, so no worries there!
