**Big time Caveat Emptor: CHECK YOUR SOURCES. It should go without saying that you should vet the information. There is a lot of hogwash out there. Take much of what you read with a grain of salt, and use it to inform future study and experimentation, but don’t necessary take the information as fact!**

Running Books

Every runner should invest a little time investigating actual, real and true, running books, both classics and new publications. Why? Because many of these books are the basis for much of the current thought out there on running technique, strategy, nutrition, training, and sports psychology. If you are looking for a place to start, check out the books that started out my running library, and see where they lead you!

Running Podcasts

If you are always on the go, running podcasts may be the ticket for you. I love listening to podcasts about running while I am running and make mental notes about topics that I want to go back and delve into in greater detail. Just like books, there are podcasts about any and every topic that has to do with running, but I love podcasts because the nature of conversation is such that the hosts and guest cover so much more than they originally set out to do. Plus, podcasts come out daily/weekly/monthly, so there is always something to look for and discover. Some of my favorites? Diz Runs (here is my episode!) and Runners Connect!

Earbuds in? I’m probably listening to a podcast.

Running Magazines, Online Running Magazines, Running Apps

Boy, do I miss Running Times. That was my favorite magazine for real running knowledge! Alas, it is no more, but there is an archive! The other bigwigs in the print and online running magazine world are Runners WorldWomen’s Running, Ultra Running, and Trail Running.

There are also a number of excellent running apps out there like RunKeeper that offer workouts and information for you as well as providing a way for you to track your running and training.

Your Local Running Specialty Store

Your local running specialty store offers way more than just some snazzy shoes! The people who work at running stores LOVE running so much that they have literally immersed themselves in it! Expect runners of every level, depth of experience, and manner of runner as well as people with a willingness and enthusiasm to share their stories and experiences! Whenever I am at a running store, I make sure to engage the staff about something because I can guarantee that I will learn something from the interaction, from new shoes and gear out or coming out to the latest skuttlebutt on the racing scene to the best places to run in the area.

Also, during big races, specialty running stores engage running celebrities for seminars and special appearances!

Local Running Community

It is increasingly easy to find and engage with the local running community. One of those ways is to go to the local running specialty store! The local running community are the true experts on running in a specific area–would you ask someone in Canada about training through a Florida summer? Well, you could, and they might have great advice, but I feel like your best bet is the local dude. 

Social Media

Social media is a fantastic source of running information. Search hashtags like #runchat #runningtips #furtherfasterforever and local running hashtags like #runchi for information and inspiration. Follow your favorite brands and runners as well!

I ran with fellow running coach, author, and running nerd Dr Jason Karp before the Chicago Marathon. We met via the power of social media, and now I am certified in his Revo2lution Running!

Running Blogs

Obviously, blogs are an excellent source of information. I like to think that this blog offers real, applicable running education in an accessible manner. Of course, there is a lot more to Suzlyfe than just running, but there are many outright running blogs. Amanda at Run to the Finish just updated her Comprehensive List of Quality Running Blogs this past January! I have so many favorite fellow bloggers and coaches that offer incredible running advice; the sake of not playing favorites, I am going to remain mum (but email me if you want suggestions)

I’ve also contributed to websites like Thrillist and Fix with running and fitness tips!

Running Coach Certifications

It has been a year and a half since I became a RRCA Certified Running Coach and a year since I got my Revo2lution Running Certification. Even if you aren’t planning on becoming a running coach, I would totally recommend the experience and focus of getting your running coach certification. You will get to meet so many other runners who are invested (literally) in their running education, plus learn fascinating tidbits and explanations that can really help you transform your running (and that of others!).

In Person or Virtual Running Summits

Running summits and running retreats are amazing opportunities to basically combine all of the above into one intensive, concentrated source of running education across all topics. In person summits give you the chance to immediately engage with the speakers, ask questions, and take notes, but I am a huge fan of virtual running summits, like the Real Runners Virtual Summit, because you a) never have to miss a session in favor of another session, b) you can have the session videos for posterity (to pause, rewind, rehash), and c) you get online communities to support the sessions for Q&A with the expert speakers and your fellow attendees!
